Sometimes Bollywood forget that not only the high investment in a movie is the surety of its success. It also need a good story. But they forget the story part and only focus on high budget which results in flop movies.
So, I came up with a short list of some Bollywood movies which are like expensive shit made in Bollywood.
Page Contents
Ra.One (2011) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection Of Ra.One
Budget: ₹130 crore
Box office Collection: ₹207 crore
In the direction of Anubhav Sinha, ‘Ra.One’ is one of the most expensive sci-fi Bollywood movie. Produce by Gauri Khan, this movie had SRK, Armaan Verma, Kareena Kapoor, and Arjun Rampal.
Story of Ra.One
Shekhar is a gaming programmer who is frustrated because of the criticism from his son Armaan, colleagues, and employers for his incapability to create something excellent. But at last, he creates a virtual character, called Ra.One.
But somehow the character enters into the real world and kills Shekar. With this, another character, G.One came into the real world too because he is the perfect opponent of Ra.One (according to the game develop by Shekhar).
This film got mixed reviews from the audience. The reasons for which the film got many criticisms because of its poor script, screenplay and somewhere for the performances of the cast.
The shotting of the movie took place in the United Kingdom besides India, and this is another reason for its high budget. Apart from that, a huge amount was also spent on the visual effects, and the technical part.
However, the expenses over the technical aspects make the film eligible to win one National Film Award, one Filmfare Award, and four International Indian Film Academy Awards.
Despite acquiring two huge records of being the most expensive Indian film and the largest international theatrical release of 2011, the film faced a drop-down in its collection.
The collection of the film dropped down by 84% in the second week after its release and later 90% in its third week. And unfortunately, the dream project of Shah Rukh Khan dropped entirely due to the release of Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Rockstar’.
Love Story 2050 (2008) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection of Love Story 2050
Budget – ₹60 crore
Box office – ₹18.5 crore
If I have to mention the worst movie in the entire career of Priyanka Chopra, I’m sure that this film will stay in the top.
Director Harry Baweja made this film starring his son Harman Baweja, and Priyanka Chopra in the leads. Beside them, Boman Irani and Archana Puran Singh also played the major roles.
Story of Love Story 2050
Like Ra.One, It is another science fiction movie, but Ra.One is a hundred times better than this. The film shows two love birds, Karan and Sana plan to get married but, Sana dies in a car accident.
So, Karan decides to go in the future and save her. As you can see the story is so simple, then what does make it complicated that audiences didn’t like it!?
The improper direction, poor screenplay, terrible script and the performance of the cast (especially Harman Baweja) are some of the reasons to be a huge flopped movie.
Special effects and the shooting in abroad countries like Adelaide, Australia make this film a high budget.
Race 3 (2018) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection of Race 3
Budget: ₹180 crore
Box office: ₹305 crore
One of the most popular action-thriller series of Bollywood ever is ‘Race’, but was ruined with its third installment ‘Race 3‘.
And the harsh fact is that the movie is as much earning then the film’s overall budget. It only because of Salman Khan’s stardom! Otherwise, the film has nothing worthful.
And ‘nothing’ means nothing, neither the script, plot, screenplay, casting, music, acting nor the action sequences. And this is the reason why I added this movie to this list.
Story of Race 3
I really don’t want to waste your time by telling you the entire cliché and poor heist story of the film. Moreover, this installment has no suspense as the previous installments.
Director Remo D’Souza planned to make it a blockbuster with huge star cast, shotting in foreign locations, unrealistic action sequences, highly expensive cars, and most importantly ‘Salman Khan’s stardom’. But he failed to make it an great action thriller.
And the foreign and Indian locations where unnecessary shots took place like; Thailand (for a song and an action sequence), Abu Dhabi, Kashmir, Ladakh (for another song’s shot), and Rajasthan.
In a nutshell, this is an accurate example of ‘the expensive shit done by Bollywood’!
Bombay Velvet (2015) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection of Bombay Velvet
Budget: ₹120 crore
Box office: ₹43.1 crore
This film is one of the huge flops of Anurag Kashyap. As we all know that Anurag Kashyap is unbeatable in the crime-thriller genre movies, but this one can’t make it, in spite of its huge budget.
Story of Bombay Velvet
The story of the film is based on Gyan Prakash book ‘Mumbai Fables’ where the entire concept is set in early 50s to 70s. It is the period when Mumbai was not a metropolis.
Here, the character Johnny (Ranbir Kapoor) wants fame and wealth to impress his love interest Rosie (Anushka Sharma). And that makes him enter into the world of crime.
Except Ranbir and Anushka, there are Kay Kay Menon, and Karan Johar (It is Karan’s second on-screen appearance after DDLJ).
The primary things for which the film became a flop were its poor script, screenplay, and improper direction.
Kalank (2019) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection of Kalank
Budget: ₹130 crore
Box office: ₹146.31 crore
Abhisek Verman directed, ‘Kalank’ became the biggest flop of the year 2019. In spite of its great soundtracks, direction, visual arts, and expensive set.
Story of Kalank
The entire storyline is set in the pre-independence period of India and is centered on six individuals’ lives. It is the tale of the six lives experiencing love, betrayal, complicated relations, desire, and fantasy.
The six characters are Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, and Aditya Roy Kapoor. Among them, some are appreciated for their performance (Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan) and some got criticism (Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha).
This film faced a huge failure because of various reasons like bad script, screenplay, and lengthy storyline which made film boring.
Tubelight (2017) | High budget flop movies
Budget and Box-Office Collection of Tubelight
Budget: ₹110 crore
Box office: ₹211.14 crore
After the release of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ in 2015, our ‘Bhaijaan’ Salman Khan took another almost similar attempt, which was ‘Tubelight’. Kabir Khan directed Tubelight is an adaptation of an American film, ‘Little Boy’.
Story of Tubelight
The film was set in the past Sino-Indian War in 1962. The story showed the lives of two brothers, Laxman and Bharat who has not any other family members except them.
Laxman (Salman Khan) is a feeble man and Bharat (Sohail Khan) is a brave army person. But the actual story starts when everyone finds Bharat missing during the war between India and China.
Everyone believes that Bharat dies except Laxman. And the rest of the film is about the journey of Laxman to find Bharat.
After watching this film, many audiences agreed to the fact that it has so many similarities to ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Even the character of Salman Khan somehow matches with the character, Pawan Kumar a.k.a Bajrangi.
And with this, I am ending the list here. From this, it is at least proven that no one can win people’s hearts and emotions with huge economic resources, not even the ‘Khan’s of Bollywood.
Everything is needed and required to be in a proper quantity in a ‘Good and sound’ movie. Just like in the process of cooking!
Now it is also mentionable that not only Box-office failure makes any film flop, but also the inner content and the other factors do! (include script, screenplay, direction, casting, acting, music, etc.).
On the contrary, we can also say that just Box-office success doesn’t make any film hit. Because we have some examples of movies which are so underrated. And these kind of movies have unique storyline and great acting by casts.
If you haven’t watched any of the movies, Congrats! And I hope, you did enjoy this long discussion!
If yes, don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comment section below and to share and aware them about these movies before they waste their precious time.
